An Ethnographic Study of Gender Relations in the Ngadas and Wonosari Communities in Malang, Indonesia

Aniek Rahmaniah, Ulfi Andrian Sari

Abstract

This study examines gender relations in the agrarian communities of Ngadas and Wonosari in Malang, Indonesia, using a qualitative ethnographic approach. The study reveals that while gender subordination exists regarding customary rituals, the communities remain deeply committed to upholding traditions and performing these rituals while prioritizing harmonious communal life. Regarding belief systems, despite differing faiths, there is a high level of tolerance and mutual respect for one another's religions and beliefs. In the social and economic spheres, relationships are characterized by cooperation and complementarity, with gender relations structured around roles and status; conversely, the political sphere tends to be male-dominated. This study contributes to the discourse on gender relations by highlighting the importance of viewing them as practices negotiated within specific contexts. The findings also demonstrate how cultural continuity and social change can coexist in shaping gender relations within contemporary agrarian societies
